UMPCs are essentially using the same operating system that desktops and laptops in use. They differ only in their features touch screen.
Features UMPC
UMPCs will also be light and small. It will weigh less than two pounds and will have more or less seven inches in size. These devices will be much smaller and lighter the tablet PCs currently on the market. It will also be much less expensive.
The UMPC is designed to be the new generation of portable PCs from Windows Tablet PC. The UMPC will include better touch screen displays with the traditional option of keyboard input connected via a universal serial bus port or Bluetooth connection. In addition, the screen can also be manipulated to see a qwerty keyboard. Unlike previous models touch screen where the stylus is the only means of entering data, a UMPC is designed to recognize finger input or any touch screen input using any other object.
UMPC also integrate Wi-Fi and cable Ethernet networking options, remote-control connectivity, echo cancellation and noise reduction microphone technology, external monitor support, more USB ports and slots for flash cards. Variety processor will also be available in unity with UMPC VIA C7 and Intel M as possible options.
Improvements to the operating system are also available in the new UMPCs. One of the examples of these improvements OS is the TouchPack which will enhance the touch screen experience of integrating an onscreen keyboard that is based thumb, a rapid start of the program, improvements in user interface of Windows Media Player skins, and a game Sudoku.
The enhancement TouchPack makes it easier for the user to launch programs in which they are divided by category by the system via large and easy to find on-screen buttons. The TouchPack's Dial Keys, on the other hand, allows the user to use his thumb to insert the text and control of other programs. Dial Keys divides basically a qwerty keyboard in two places and keyboard in one inch reach part of the unit.
Challenges UMPC
One of the remaining challenges UMPC is to extend battery life from the current 3 hours for an entire working day of 8 hours. To combat this limitation UMPCs are designed with advanced power management systems that include a longer boot option that will allow the user to quickly launch a UMPC in different ways such as using multimedia.
